The Bath Library Book Club will be discussing “Educated” by Tara Westover on
Monday, February 10 at 4:30 pm at the Bath Public Library. “Educated” is Tara’s
award winning memoir of her childhood in the mountains of Idaho, and of her
subsequent education and struggle for self-invention.
Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was 17 the first time she
set foot in a classroom. Her childhood was spent preparing for the end of the world by
stockpiling home-canned peaches and sleeping with her “head-for-the-hills bag”. In the
summers she stewed herbs for her mother, a midwife and healer, and in the winters she
salvaged in her father’s junkyard. Lacking any formal education, Tara taught herself
enough mathematics and grammar to be admitted to Brigham Young University where
she studied history and discovered a wider world.
Books may be picked up at the Bath Library; hours are Monday and Wednesday
9:00 am to noon and 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm; and Saturday 9:00 am to noon. Anyone
with an interest in reading and conversing about books is welcome to attend. For
