Vandalism Landaff

From the desk of Rachael Booth, Landaff Selectboard Member:

Recently someone defaced a stop sign in Landaff with hard-to-remove political statements. Because of this vandalism of the state-owned sign, the town must request the state to replace it, using your property tax dollars.

It is not known who vandalized the sign, but this act is considered a crime under New Hampshire Revised Statutes Annotated (RSA) 634:2 which defines criminal mischief.

The statute states that:

“If the cost to repair the damage is over $100, it is considered a Class A Misdemeanor, punishable by up to one year in jail and a fine of up to $2,000. If the damage impairs public transportation or the financial loss exceeds $1,500, it is then considered a Class B Felony charge, punishable by up to 7 years in prison and a fine of up to $4,000.
Any person found guilty will be ordered to pay restitution for the damage they caused.”

The statute further states that “Damage to or unauthorized removal of traffic signs is considered a serious crime because it can endanger public safety by interfering with the orderly flow of traffic and can cause accidents.”

If you see anyone defacing any of the road signs in Landaff, please report it to the Selectboard at once. This is unacceptable in our beautiful little town.
