The Bath Library Book Club will be discussing “The Frozen River” by Ariel Lawhon on Monday, December 8 at 5:00 pm at the Bath Public Library. The Frozen River, a historical mystery novel, was inspired by the real-life diary of 18th-century midwife Martha Ballard. The story is set in Hallowell, Maine, in 1789.
When a man is found dead in the frozen Kennebec River, Martha, a midwife, is called to examine the body. She begins to suspect a connection between this death and a murder/rape accusation against a prominent town gentleman. Martha’s investigation uncovers a web of secrets and prejudices in the community.
The novel explores themes of justice, community, and the power dynamics between men and women in a patriarchal society. It highlights the struggles of women in the late 1700s and the importance of a woman’s voice and legacy.
